Soy
Like peanuts, soybeans are legumes. A soy allergy is more prevalent among babies than older children. About 30% to 40% of infants who are allergic to cow's milk are also allergic to the protein in soy formulas. A soy allergy is an abnormal response of the body to the proteins found in soy. Soy can be found in many different products and really checking the labels is the only solution to helping your child. Infants on formula may be advised by their pediatrician to change to a Nutramigen type formula. This type of formula is created for babies with soy or milk allergies.

Some of the most common foods to avoid that contain soy or soy derived ingredients are:

Hot cocoa mixes Baked goods, such as cakes or cookies
Malt beverages Hard candies
Fruit drink mixes Nut candies
Pork link sausage Fudge and caramels
Deli/luncheon meats Worcestershire sauce
Commercially prepared meats Lea & Perrins® sauce
Meat or Cheese substitutes Fermented soybean pastes (miso and natto)
Tofu/Bean Curd Soy sauce
Natto Tamari sauce
Miso Granola
Canned soups Breakfast bars
Commercial entrees and combination foods Imitation bacon bits

Toddlers are picky enough eaters and it is hard enough to find foods they will eat, but these foods are all soy-free. Always double check labels as food manufacturers change ingredients often. Most products now have a label that says, “This product contains soy,” but always double check.
