One of the most common
locations allergies can be found, is the bedroom. Most adults spend
a minimum of 5-8 hours in their bedroom on a daily basis and it can
be one of the one of worst places in the entire house for allergens
to hide. Living inside of our pillows, mattresses, box springs, comforters
and blankets are dust mites, dust mite feces and dried, dead, dust
mite body parts. Pollen, molds, pet dander and dust also thrive in
our beds. In fact, after 3 years, a majority of your mattress weight
is dust and dust mites, which is why the mattress seems heavier over
the years. These allergens cause allergic symptoms such as stuffiness,
sneezing, running nose and itchy eyes.
The air that you are breathing in your sleep can be filled with dust
and dust mites. Point air registers away from your bed and use allergen
reducing air filters. Allergies have been linked to insomnia and snoring
as well, so keeping your ventilation system clean of dust, dander,
and mold will help you to sleep the night through. See Clean Air Management
(link to clean air) for ways to reduce the level of allergens in the
air.
There are many simple ways to reduce the level of allergens in the
bedroom.
Mattress/BoxSpring Encasings and Covers, Pillow Covers and
Encasings
These casings and enclosures are able to fully zip and protect your
mattress from dust and dust mites. They range in pricing depending
on size of the mattress, box spring, material. However, make sure
that they are labeled allergy-free and you can prevent dust and dust
mites from invading your bedding. These casings are machine washable
and should be washed in hot water (140 degrees Fahrenheit) at least
twice a month.
Hypo-Allergenic Pillows, Hypo Allergenic Blankets and Comforters,
Allergen Reducer Duvet Covers
Comforters are home to many allergens, including dust mites
and goose down. You can still use your favorite comforter and cover
it with allergen-proof lining. These casings are machine washable
and should be washed in hot water at least twice a month.
