Avoid Inability to Assimiliate or Allergy to Lactose

It is estimated that between 30 and 50 million Americans suffer from lactose intolerance-the inability to digest significant amounts of lactose, the predominant sugar occurring in milk and milk products. Belize it or not: The World Soymilk Development Index

Belize it or not: The World Soymilk Development Index

Filed under: Food and Drink, Belize, Travel Health Greetings from Belize! Something just dawned on me today while walking through "downtown" San Pedro, Belize: you can judge the "development" of an area by whether or not it has soymilk readily available in grocery stores. Sure, I'm waiting for a flu...

Vegan Fairy Cakes

Vegan Fairy Cakes

Shorty's last day of pre-school is tomorrow and they're having a garden party. All the parents were asked to bring something, so I made a batch of vegan fairy cake. There a few kids who, like my daughter, have allergies to either dairy or eggs. These are sweet wee cakes that they can have. I did the...

the weekend in review

It was a busy one here. On Friday, we took off early to shuttle all three cats to the vet for their annual. George has been coughing a bit lately and had some sneezes, so we wanted to get him checked out just to be sure nothing else was wrong. I was thinking that he most likely was suffering from al...

opening a door to summer - and a verdict

opening a door to summer - and a verdict

Summertime has begun. The Eldest is now home from school, and we're learning the new pattern of our days. Our first rainy day taught me how important it is that the boys spend hours on a playground or outside, moving fast. Our first playdate taught me much about balancing the boys, an outing oriente...

Soy AllergyHome >> Soy Food Allergy

Soybeans have become a major part of processed food products in the United States. Avoiding products made with soybeans can be difficult, as Soybeans and Soybean by products are found in many sauces, dressings, and processed foods. Soybeans alone are not a major food in the diet but, because they're in so many products, eliminating all those foods can result in an unbalanced diet. In addition, Soybean by products can be found in many allergy medications such as Benadryl, we recommend consulting your physician before using if you do have Soy Allergies. The good news is that because Soy is one of the eight major Food Allergies found in Americas, there are labeling laws requiring that if soy is an ingredient in a product, it must be listed on the label.

Keep in Mind

Soybeans and soy products are found in baked goods, canned tuna, cereals, crackers, infant formulas, sauces, and soups.
At least one brand of peanut butter lists soy on the label.
Studies show that most soy-allergic individuals may safely eat soybean oil (not cold pressed, expeller pressed, or extruded oil). If you are allergic to soy, ask your doctor whether or not you should avoid soy oil.

If you suspect that you have a soy allergy, consult your physician or allergists and get tested!
